This was a classic at the time when it was written and published for the first time and since then it has not lost its charm like The Three Musketeers and Twenty Years After. Maybe teens have a reading assignment over summer (6 months from now). Fans of literature who haven’t listened to this story by Alexandre Dumas to this day, have surely missed a classic. Theres LEGIT reasons for these things to exist. When I regretfully completed "The Count of Monte Cristo", I went through withdrawal and wondered which book afterwards I could ever enjoy as much as I enjoyed Alexander Dumas, The Count of Monte Cristo. Rolling out: Abridged Editions of Monte Cristo. First published in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo remains one of literatures greatest adventures. Tried listening to it in bed but would fall off to sleep and have to re-listen to a chapter the following morning. 'A piece of perfect storytelling.' Robert Louis Stevenson. Soon into the book, I found myself making extra time and and couldn't wait to get back to listening to this book. When I began to listen to this book, due to its length I wondered if I would find the time necessary to listen to it all over a reasonable period. At that point I discovered the Pocket Books version is an ABRIDGED version with about 70 chapters. At about chapter 30, I was hooked on the story and reading reviews and doing research on it. Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? I am reviewing the Pocket Books Enriched Classics version of the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. If I had to select a favorite scene, it would be the escape of Edmund Dantes from the horrible dungeon prison Château d'If. Of all the ‘Masked Avengers’ and ‘Caped Crusaders’ in literature, the Count of Monte Cristo is at once the most daring and the most vulnerable. As the reader, I soon became familiar with each of them, but the twist and turns in their lives kept one wanting to read on I amazed at the way the author inter weaved the lives of the several and varied characters. If you could sum up The Count of Monte Cristo in three words, what would they be?
